The project aims to establish the basis for a long-lasting cooperation and exchange of expertise between the UK and South African academe and industry in the field of carbon capture and storage (CCS).

Carbon capture and storage or CCS is a method that can be used to sequester CO2 emissions from the atmosphere to manage the adverse effects of global warming. By this means up to 90% of the CO2 Emission from fossil fuels can be prevented to enter to the atmosphere.  This three step technology consists of capturing CO2 from large point sources, transporting CO2 via pipeline or ship to the carefully selected storage sites such as depleted oil and gas reservoirs or deep saline aquifers.
